My name is Joe Winston and this is my 12 year teaching at HKIS. I thought grade 4 for 9 years and grade 3 for the past 3 years.
My mission for the class is to develop an independent, self-motivated, life-long learner within each student. I use a variety of teaching styles in my classroom. The students will work as a class, in large and small groups, and individually. I use both teacher and child-centered learning styles, but more of the latter. I’ve experienced that students can learn a lot from working with and teaching each other.
The students are also at an age where they should start to take on more responsibilities for their learning and their actions. I demonstrate in class that they should always show respect for self, others and property.
This year marks my 23rd year teaching elementary school. After graduating from the University of Iowa, I obtained a 5th/6th grade teaching position in Iowa City. After five years of teaching in Iowa, I traveled to Europe and taught 5th and 6th grade at the John F. Kennedy Schule, in Berlin, Germany for two years.
Upon my return to the States in 2001, I was lucky enough to rejoin the same school I was with before, again teaching 5th and 6th grade. At the end of the 2003 school year my wife, Stacey, and I decided to yet again return to the JFK Schule, in Germany, for another two-year teaching assignment.
Stacey and I have always had a desire to meet and work with people from around the world. Learning to respect the differences in others is a very important tool in life. That’s why we chose to continue our international experience and moved to Asia.
My wife also works at the school assisting in the LP's library. In our “spare time” my wife and I enjoy traveling, music, movies, and a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities with our three children.
